If you want on top of the world …

Imagine how hard was to make this restaurant. Over 2,300 meters up, on top of the Niesen in Switzerland. The Berghaus Niesen restaurant was recently remodeled by architects Aebi & Vincent, and the result is simply stunning.

You could go for the fondue and the raclette, but we suspect if the food totally sucked, you wouldn’t really notice. The ride up in the funicular and the view down from the summit would probably be worth it.

The Niesen is located in the Swiss Alps and is almost a perfect pyramid in shape. It also towers about the other snow-capped mountains nearby, making views from the restaurant almost unreal.

The funicular, restaurant and adjacent hotel are currently closed, but if you want to take in the view, there’s always the world’s longest staircase – a chilling 11,674 steps, which people have been known to run up competitively. If that’s a little on the intimidating side (especially since it is usually only for use by funicular staff), you’ll have to wait ‘til May when it re-opens for business.
